The Cave

All upon a starry night
we travel far and fast in flight.
At last the cave is in our sight.
The journey's just begun.
It's mouth is moist and dark and near.
It's invitation vastly clear.
Then one by one we disappear.
Devoured by the Earth.
Descending down, we tunnel deep.
Into it's heart we softly creep.
High chamber walls of stone are steep,
still bravely, we press on.
While winding through the rock and clay
we stumble on a pool of gray.
It's murky waters block our way.
All hope seems lost until...
our leader with his fearless soul
moves head first through a tiny hole
and brings us closer to our goal.
Our battle's halfway won.
Cramped passageways and corridors
lead up to drier warmer floors.
While up above, the wind it roars
down here, the cavern's calm.
Now restless pigeons take to flight
emerging forth into the night.
The waning crescent sheds moonlight
upon their ice-tipped wings.
And as we crawl out from the ground,
our quest complete, our friendship bound,
we carry home the secrets found,
beneath the quiet Earth.
